On Samuel's tenth birthday, he receives a telescope as a special gift from his father. It's the only thing left behind when he mysteriously disappears. He is found on board a ship heading for Lisbon, Portugal, and he's not alone.

A second stowaway is soon discovered, and whilst docked in Lisbon, a slave boy is rescued by the crew. But before the boys can get to know one another, a terrifying storm hits the ship and strands them at sea.
