On 19 August 1942, soldiers of the Second Canadian Division took part in the ill-fated and controversial raid on Dieppe, France. Three veterans who survived the Raid and the subsequent years in prisoner of war camps provided first-hand accounts of their years with Les Fusiliers Mont-Royal, from their enrolment in 1940 to their liberation as POWs in 1945. About the Author
Michael John Laekas was born on 5 February 1943 in Brighton, England. He has three daughters, Kimberley, Alison, Melanie, and four grandchildren, Magdalena, Jacob, Isabella, and Joshua. He currently lives with his wife Johanne in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, Quebec, Canada. His latest book A Soldier's Journey (1940-1945) honours the young French Canadians who, as proud members of Les Fusiliers Mont-Royal, took part in the ill-fated raid on Dieppe, France, on 19 August 1942. The idea for this book came following a 47-day trip he took in 2011 to follow his father's journey during the Second World War, from his enlistment in 1940 to his repatriation in 1945.
